A selection of stunning modern classics helped Silverstone Auctions continue its run of strong results this year, achieving a sales rate of 84 per cent and total sales of £2million at the Practical Classics Restoration Show on Saturday.

An eclectic range of project cars as well as road ready classics were on offer at the NEC, Birmingham, with a wealth of international buyers joining those in the room via phone and online bidding. A 2010 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, one of just 500 made worldwide, secured the highest price at the auction. The car sold to a buyer in the US for a premium inclusive £236,250, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate. Another Porsche 911 GT2, a 2003 996 example, sold for £86,625, more than £10,000 over its upper estimate.

Sports cars from Munich were also in demand. A rare and superbly presented 2001 BMW Z8 proved a hit with buyers selling for £123,750, nearly £50,000 over its lower estimate.  The market for Ferraris shows no sign of slowing with a 1994 Ferrari 348 Spider selling for £65,250, while an exceptional 1998 Ferrari F355 Spider sold for £72,000.

Commenting on the sale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale said: “It was a delight to return to the Practical Classics Restoration Show this weekend and host our second auction at the event. This year’s sale offered a fantastic selection of cars for buyers looking for a ‘turn key’ car as well as a project and clearly the catalogue appealed.”

Aston Martin prices continue upwards and both on offer in the sale sold well. An early four headlamp example 1971 Aston Martin DBS V8 sold for £79,875, nearly £25,000 over its lower estimate, while a 1980 Aston Martin V8 sold for £87,750.

Those looking for their next restoration project were spoilt for choice. A superb 1960 Austin Healey 3000 BT7 with just one owner since 1966 sold for £19,125, and a highly original 1972 Rolls-Royce Corniche Fixed Head Coupe by Mulliner Park Ward sold for £23,625.

Consignments are now being invited into the May Sale, taking place at Silverstone circuit on May 23rd. Amongst the cars already consigned is a 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS. The desirable carburettor example, finished in the original Ferrari colour of Giallo Fly Yellow with complementing black leather interior, has kerb appeal like no other.
