The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu is proud to host an evening with former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and Formula One driver John Surtees CBE in its line-up of lectures for 2017.
Surtees will look back over his long racing career which won him seven World Championships on motorcycles, a Formula One world drivers’ title and the North American Can-Am Championship for sports cars when he gives his talk in the lecture theatre at Beaulieu on Friday 3rd March.
During his racing life Surtees, the son of a motorcycle dealer, went on to design, build and race his own Team Surtees F1, F2 and F5000 cars in the 1970s. He became the ambassador of the Racing Steps Foundation and at the age of 82, still participates in classic events with bikes from his stable of vintage racing machines.
Tickets for his talk in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum Trust Collections Centre at Beaulieu are on sale at £12.50 for Friends and £15 for non-members. Each ticket includes a £5 donation to the Henry Surtees Foundation.
On Saturday 21st January Beaulieu’s former Film and Video Library Manager Steve Vokins will provide a fun evening of film clips from the archives with Celebrities from the Film Vaults.
Featuring celebrities before and after they became famous, these hidden gems have been waiting for their opportunity to shine. Tickets are £7.50 for Friends and £10 for non-members.
Then on Saturday 25th March author Mike Varndell will look at British record breaking and the people who made it happen in his talk which shares the name of his book, The British are Coming.
Campbell, Segrave, Don, Eyston and Cobb are all featured for their battles to become the fastest men on Earth. Varndell tells their stories in pictures from his book and will show some previously unseen images which have come to light since the book’s release.
In March, Beaulieu will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of Sir Henry Segrave’s 203mph Land Speed Record in the 1000hp Sunbeam which is on display in the museum and will form part of the talk. There will also be the opportunity to hear about work being carried out on the 1000hp Sunbeam from the museum staff involved in the project, and to see some related items from the National Motor Museum Trust Collections. Varndell will also talk about his own Project 100. Tickets cost £7.50 for Friends and £10 for non-members.
All evenings will start at 7.30pm in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum Collections Centre at Beaulieu and the museum will open from 6pm for private viewings atno extra charge.
