The seafront above the Monaco marina must have been a welcome sight at 4am for the Scottish team in racing businessman Sandy McEwen’s Porsche 914/6. Enjoying enthusiastic support along the entire route from local crowds who built bonfires at the roadside and, occasionally, shovelled snow onto the track to enliven the proceedings, Sandy McEwen and well-known rally navigator Alan Stark dedicated their achievement to the memory of Scottish racing driver Jim Clark.

“Our Vredestein Snowtrac 5 Winter tyres, although designed for more modern cars, suited the 47-year-old Porsche extremely well in wet, dry and snowy conditions, providing it with rewarding and predictable balance and handling. Also, the Vredestein Arctrac studded tyres we switched to before tackling sections with ice or hard-packed snow were superb and got us out of trouble a few times!” said Sandy.

The Scottish crew dedicated its efforts to raise funds for the Jim Clark Museum; Clark, who twice won the Formula 1 World Championship and was victorious in the Indianapolis 500, was tragically killed in a Formula 2 race 50 years ago.

Our man on the ground Johnny Tipler covered the Rallye Historique for us, following the Rally and special stages in his Porsche Boxster S (Vredestein shod) encountering a certain amount of snow and ice.

Said Johnny, ‘we couldn’t possibly have motored along some of these stages without our Vredestein Snowtrac winter tyres; they were invaluable when travelling through the white stuff, imparting complete confidence, and at no time did I feel in peril of losing it.’
