Castle Coombe Mini Action Day: a fun day out come rain and shine!

Our specialist Mini correspondent Keith Mainland went down to Castle Coombe’s Mini Action Day recently to find out what was going on.

This event runs like a track day, allowing road and competition cars on track in batches throughout the day.  With this year being the Mini’s 60th birthday there was a good turn out for the Action Day despite heavy autumn showers. Castle Coombe is a fast circuit with a sting in its tail at Quarry Corner and the combination of standing water and the Mini’s lift-off oversteer kept drivers and spectators entertained.

There was a good turn out of Mini clubs from around the South East/West covering the classic Mini and new MINI with the usual variety of well restored original and highly personalised cars.  My favourite from the displays was a lovely Speedwell blue classic pickup. As well as the cars, there was a good number of established traders and jumble stands dealing in classic Mini spares and ready to sell you all the bits you could ever need and a few more besides.

A highlight of the day for me was meeting John and Liz Stratton and their rally Mini 1275GT.  John and Liz bought the 1971 1275GT in 1976 and have competed in more than 200 events together since then.  They are absolutely diehard motorsport enthusiasts and had been marshalling in the morning before I met them as well as bringing the 1275GT to Mini Action Day.  There was also an interesting selection of fibreglass Mini-based cars like the Mini Marcos, Midas and Minigem as well as a turbocharged MiniMinus which looked great on track.

If you are a mini fan or know of one.
