Silverstone Auctions returns to Race Retro, to host a dedicated Competition Car Sale on Friday 24th February, in addition to its Classic Car Sale on the 25th and 26th February at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. We had a look at the best of the classic racers.
One of my favourites is the 1956 Austin A30 – built by Mike Jordan’s team, you can be assured of a high quality of build and attention to detail. Mike’s son British Touring Car Champion may have exceptional talent, which helped pilot this little gem to a Goodwood win. But if you are interested in joining the A30 party here is a unique opportunity to buy the best car on the grid and give it a good go, all just in time for the start of the HRDC season. Estimate £33,000 – £38,000
Another of my favourites is this 1974 Triumph Dolomite Sprint, this is one of a four-car team which entered the 1974 Spa 24 Hours sponsored by Butch Tailors – the ‘Butch Racing Team’. Car no. 46 was driven by Claude De Wael & Etienne Staelpart and the team also ran the car that finished 5th overall driven by the famous pairing of Tony Dron and Andy Rouse. Whilst running very well in the top ten, this particular car (chassis 2110) unfortunately failed in the 23rd hour (listed as suspension maladies but believed to be a rear axle failure). – I had the opportunity to drive the sister car in last year’s Historic Touring Car Challenge races at Donington & Silverstone which now fall into the Tony Dron Trophy for Group 1 cars. We had immense fun driving the Dolly and we even picked up a prize. This one will need an overhaul as it last raced in 1981, but offers great value for fun given the estimate at £20,000 – £25,000.00

1961 Emerson Formula 1 Climax – Now this is a rare find, apparently (Chassis number 1004) is the only surviving F1 Emeryson and even this car might not have made it, had it not been for the efforts of car restorer and showroom owner, Peter Morley who bought it in 1992 and returned it to the way it would have been when driven by Settember and Campbell-Jones in its heyday. When fully finished it was entered at the first Goodwood Circuit Revival in 1998 driven by Paul Osborn.
A highly rare and eligible racer offering a passport for Goodwood, Monaco Grand Prix Historique and other HGPCA or HSCC events. Estimate £150,000 – £180,000.

This 1973 BMW 3.0CSL Batmobile was converted from 3.0CS road car in the late 1980s by saloon racer – the late Tim Busby, and has accumulated many excellent race results over the ensuing 30 years on race tracks all over the world. In 2004 it was sold to Silverstone Auctions owner, Nick Whale, and co-owned by Ian Guest. The pair campaigned the car in Patrick Peter’s Classic Endurance Racing series “CER,” throughout Europe, including twice at Classic Le Mans in 2004 and 2006 where it won its ‘Plateau’ on both occasions. It also won the coveted Index of Performance award at the 2004 Le Mans as well as further class wins at Monza, Silverstone, and Spa. It was then sold to Alan Tice who successfully campaigned the car for two or three seasons in the Masters series, before changing hands again in 2013. The car has had a break from racing under the current owner (a serious collector) but it has had an engine rebuild by noted engine specialist Lester Owen in 2014 at a cost of £6,800, and also had the bodywork modified to Group IV type arches and a full repaint. Having completed just one track day where it covered just a handful of laps at Silverstone. The dyno sheet confirms 379bhp on tap and 306 lbs/ft torque available when Lester had finished the engine rebuild late in 2014. The original, and very rare, Kugelfischer slide fuel injection is still fitted and the car is ready to be enjoyed once again, although it will need fresh race preparation as it has had so little use over the last 3 years. Perfect for the HTCC, Masters or Peter Auto series – and estimated to fetch £100,000 – £125,000.
Other highlights of the sale include:
– Genuine ex-Works 1989 Aston Martin AMR1 from one of the great and golden eras of motorsport, with a pre-sale estimate of £500,000 to £550,000.
As one of just four Works built cars, chassis AMR1/05 competed and finished in three world championship events in period at the hands of Works drivers including Brian Redman, the late, great David Leslie, David Sears and Stanley Dickens. Professionally maintained and regularly campaigned at an international level in historic Group C and IMSA racing, this rare example offers exceptional provenance with a proven ability to win.
– 1976 Ford Escort Mk ll driven by one of the 20th Century’s greatest rally drivers, Colin McRae, and coming from a 33 year McRae family ownership. Described as “ready to rally” with all the paperwork in place, it is offered at a very attractive guide price of £29,000 to £34,000.
-1968 Chevrolet Camaro prepared by Bill Shaw Racing and driven and owned by Martin Thomas. Most recognisable for its unforgettable performance in the 1971 Iberia Trophy Race at the Crystal Palace circuit, the Camaro will be offered at a sale estimate of £65,000 to £75,000.
– From the same era, a fast road specification, early 1963 Jaguar E-Type Roadster Lightweight Recreation is estimated at £75,000 to £85,000.
– 1968 Ginetta G16 offers race drivers the chance to own a well prepared, race-ready, historic example with current HTP papers and eligibility for a number of championships, estimated at £90,000 to £110,000.
