We know many of our readers are racing this weekend at Goodwood, and wish everyone a safe and successful race weekend, here is a round-up of what is happening and when:
What races are on?
S. F. Edge Trophy – This is for Edwardian Specials of a type that raced up to 1923, look out for Andrew Frankel and his brother Richard racing a 3-Litre Bentley TT amongst the Bugatti, Delage and early Mercedes exotica.
Gerry Marshall Trophy – This is the big one, a race for Group 1 saloon cars of a type that raced between 1970 and 1982. It attracts all the named pro-drivers and this year is no exception with the likes of Andrew Jordan, Mark Blundell, Matt Neal, Rob Huff, Tim Harvey Adam Morgan, Anthony Reid and many more. This year the Gerry Marshall Trophy becomes a one-hour, two-driver race. The Group 1 saloons will commence battle on Saturday eve and go into dusk, ahead of the evening’s lively entertainment and fireworks.
On the Sunday, the inaugural Gerry Marshall Sprint will form the second-leg of this touring-car epic. Taking inspiration from the current British Touring Car Championship, this race will feature a reversed grid, with the owners taking over, their starting position determined by the car’s result from the Gerry Marshall Trophy.
Only cars running at the finish of the Saturday-evening Trophy race, and those that competed 95 per cent of the Saturday winner’s race distance, will be reversed. All others will start the Sunday Sprint from their Saturday Trophy finish or non-finish position.
Scott Brown Trophy – This race is a new feature for this meeting. The name Scott Brown is synonymous with Lister. Despite being severely handicapped as a result of his mother contracting German Measles during pregnancy, William Archibald ‘Archie’ Scott Brown was one of the most naturally gifted drivers of his era. In particular, he enjoyed huge success behind the wheel of a Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’, so named for its curved bodywork. To celebrate 60 years of arguably Lister’s most famous model – the ‘Knobbly’ – 30 Listers, including Jaguar- and Chevrolet-engined examples will all race together. There are lots of seasoned regulars amongst the grid, too many to mention but my money would be on Chris Ward /Richard Goddard, Barry Wood/ Martin Stretton or Gary Pearson.
Varzi Trophy – This race is for Franco-Italian Grand Prix and Voiturette cars of a type that raced up to 1939 – a stunning grid of amazing cars will give you a chance to see the stunning Bugatti Type 35C from Martin and Lukas Halusa, who will have their sights set on a podium and two Alfa Romeo 8C Monza cars raced by Christopher Mann and Derek Hood.
Weslake Cup – For A-Series-engined sports and GT cars of a type that raced between 1958 and 1966 – to include lots of Speedwell and Healey Sebring Sprites, a couple of WSM Midgets including Graham Robson and his son. The Woolmer family could also be looking for a podium, but everyone will need to keep an eye on the Colburn family, James and Richard Colburn known to pedal hard, are out fielding a Lenham Sprite GT.
Graham Hill Trophy –For GT cars of a type that raced at Goodwood between 1960 and 1966, this is the Jaguar E-Type, AC Cobra, Bizzarini arena. A fiercely competitive battle in which we have seen some scary accidents in the past. This weekend it will be great to see Gary and John Pearson out in a Ferrari 250 LM. Emanuele Piro is actually on the entry list with Shaun Lynn in an Ac Cobra Le Mans Coupe, which should on paper be quick, but then here is the little Lotus Elan 26R of Jeremy Cooke and Mike Dowd – nimble but also fast!
Pierpoint Cup – For V8-engined saloon cars of a type that raced up to 1966 or basically – the tank slapping Mustang alley. That is apart from the father and son Whale family out in a Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 – can’t wait to see that going round Goodwood! The Bryant family have also gone non-mustang with a Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda, both should be fun to watch!
Derek Bell Cup –For one-litre ‘screamer’ Formula 3 cars of a type that raced between 1964 and 1970 the race is on Saturday at 16.15pm.
Brabham Trophy – This race is for rear-engined Grand Prix cars of a type that raced between 1954 and 1960, and is made up of every Cooper Climax Type of its day. Look out for Stephen Bond /Andrew Hibberd in the later Lotus Climax 18, John Young/Derek Hood in the Cooper T45/51 and Rudi Freidrichs in a T53 ‘Lowline’.
Surtees Trophy – For sports-racing prototypes of a type that raced between 1963 and 1966 and this is where the Ford GT40 measure up against a handful of Lola Chevrolet T70 and McLaren Chevy M1B cars. My money is on a GT40 win here, and if I had to put a name to it, it would be probably Shaun Lynn or Oli Bryant.
Hailwood Trophy – This is the only motorcycle race, for two-stroke 250cc and 350cc Grand Prix motorcycles of a type that raced between 1970 and 1984.
