Blue Skies greeted the annual Bentley Drivers Club meeting last weekend at Silverstone and some great competitive racing was had by all.
Highlights included the AR Motorsport Morgan Challenge which enjoyed a full grid of 34 Morgans. Some familiar faces blocked out the front two rows of the grid after qualifying. Oliver Bryant in pole with Keith Ahlers 2nd and William Plant 3rd all in Morgan +8s. Keith got the better start and went on to lead the race for the first two laps, but Oliver found a way back through on lap 3 and that was the order in which they finished. Oliver with a 12 second lead, William made a dash for the finish line but it wasn’t enough and Keith finished just a whisker ahead.
In the Pre-War races Paul Forty won the Bentley Handicap race in his Bentley MKVI special, with Stuart Worthington in 2nd. And sixteen Pre-war beauties lined up for the Bentley Scratch race for Pre 66 Cars & Pre-War Team Challenge. Once again Paul Forty qualified in pole position, but the race was won by Michael Haig who started in 4th place on the grid, he took the lead on lap 8. Paul Forty couldn’t hold him off and had to settle for 2nd, with Gerard McCosh rounding off the top three.
Sixteen Healey’s lined up for the BIC Healey Trophy, where Drew Cameron sat on pole position. But the Speedwell Sprite was no match for the quick 100/4 in the race. Jonathan Abecassis muscled his way to the front despite bogging down off the start, there were galant attempts to hold him off from Nick Matthews in another quick 100/4 and both Drew and Gordon Elwell’s Sprite, as you can see from his great onboard footage below. The final finish order was Abecassis, Drew, Ewell then Matthews.
Twenty eight cars lined up for the FISCAR race, the usual mix of Healey, Triumph TR2 and Lotus Elites. With Jonathan Abecassis on pole position, Robin Ellis in his Lotus Elite in 2nd and Nick Matthews in 3rd. But the lighter Lotus Elite got off the blocks first and never looked back, Robin Ellis managed to keep his nose clean, fend off the 100/4 sorties and come through for a lights to flag victory at the end of the 30 minute race.
