In a packed auction room in London’s Battersea Park last Sunday night, RM Sotheby’s achieved a fantastic £16,658,410* ($25,404,075 USD) in auction and post-auction private sales. Well-established on the global collector car calendar, the central London auction saw Ferraris continue to prove their blue-chip credentials in the market, claiming the top three sales spots of the evening. Top honours went to the historic 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’, which realised a strong £4,760,000, while the 1964 Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta ‘Lusso’ sold for £1,232,000 and a 1992 Ferrari F40 made an excellent £845,600.

The sale’s cover car – the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’, chassis 0897 GT – is  one of the first of just 36 250 GT LWB TdFs built with the desirable single-louvre body style and covered headlamps. The car has a wonderful period racing history and will provide its lucky new owner with the ultimate dual-purpose classic Ferrari for both road and competition use, taking full advantage of its freshly rebuilt and potent V12 engine.

The 1964 Ferrari 250GT/L Berlinetta ‘Lusso’, chassis 5885, was certainly not short of admirers during the two-day Battersea preview. One of the finest and most beautiful cars of the 1960s, a ‘Lusso’ is highly prized by collectors around the world. Resplendent in its immaculate silver paintwork, the example offered last night is the 338th of only 350 examples produced, and richly deserved its £1,232,000 sales price. The third biggest seller of the evening was the 1992 Ferrari F40, offered in near perfect condition, being a single-owner example with fewer than 4,000 kilometres from new. Selling for bang on estimate, the car achieved a solid £845,600.

Another car worthy of mention was the 1964 Maserati Mistral 3.7 Spyder, chassis no. AM109/S 035, which also garnered significant pre-sale interest.  The 1964 Earls Court Motor Show car, it was sold new to British screen icon, Diana Dors, who had fallen in love with it whilst visiting the motor show. As one of only 20 right-hand-drive Spyders built, the Mistral is extremely rare and was presented in fully restored condition. It was therefore no surprise that it made a £526,400, a world record for a Maserati Mistral sold at auction.
